FASHIONABLE HEADWEAR FOR THE WINTER
by: Rachel McHollister

How better to accessorize your look in the winter than with the head gear, and I’m not talking the typical toque. Yes a toque may keep you warm and all, but lets face it, those tight toques are really only for keeping your head warm while doing some sweet turnpikes down the slopes. However, for a regular old day in the city the poor old toque will not suffice, especially when there are plenty of other ways to accessorize your head. One in particular that has really caught my attention is the Turband. It not only covers your ears from the harsh cold weather but it looks trendy. These little inventions can be found in many mainstream stores, but why not try making one yourself.

Before you begin this crafty endeavor what you other than a pair of scissors and a needle and thread. You will also need a long piece of fabric, something that is able to wrap around your head and have a little room to spare.

You can use any type of fabric, when doing this you can really make it an original by using an old pair of your favourite pants, a t-shirt or some odd and ends of fabric. You can also go to your favourite fabric store and pick out up some of your favourite prints and measure them to your head. Make sure to double up the fabric to make it extra sturdy.

How to Make:

  1. When you get your fabric and bring it home, you will want to lay it out and cut it a bit larger than the circumference of your head. After doing that keep is layed out and fold one end one-third of the way in and do that to the bottom as well so the two side will meet in the middle of the back of the fabric.
  2. Next step you will want to bring the two ends of the fabric together and get out your needle and thread and do about 10 simple stitches along the end then pull the string as tight as you can bunching the fabric. Once you are happy with how tight it is stitch it in place. Make sure its sturdy, if not it will come apart.
  3. Flip it around and voila you have yourself a turband!

To make your new favourite head peace a little more unique add a broach to the middle of it, some feathers on the side or bedazzle it. Make it your own!
