GREAT DECISIONS THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE
By: Laura Sonksen

Usually a person can trace every good thing or success they’ve had in their life back to something they did or didn’t decide effectively. Whether it was in the course of a relationship or a decision toward a job or career or a schooling program, it was a series of moments of deciding, conscious or unconscious, that paved the current road you’re walking on. If you don’t like the road you’re treading, you have the choice to exit at any time or keep adding the miles. You might think “well, you don’t know what has happened to me” or “I don’t know how I got here”  or maybe “I didn’t bring this on myself”. These things may be true. Those kinds of places that we find ourselves can be confusing and thus debilitating, weakening us, therefore  because we don’t know how to change or “fix” a situation, we do nothing at all, this is how it becomes debilitating to our life progress.

There is a Chinese Proverb that says “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a first step”.

In light of a problem or problems we may have, the idea of just one step sounds doable and offers me hope. There is also another saying that says “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!”.  Let me offer you this idea, instead of life happening “to you”, why don’t we come at it this way “I’m going to make my life happen”. In order to make life happen for you  in any significant way, we need to make some decisions. So let’s make some decisions! These things will help move you forward in your life. If you’re feeling stuck, stick to these:

•    Make a decision to think only toward your future and stop thinking about your past.

That means even yesterday! IF you do this, you will put more energy into creating the life you want instead of recreating an old scenario in your head. If you want to stay stuck where you are, stay on the perpetual, nowhere going, not so merry go-round.

•    Make a decision to lose the weight of old hurts and spite.

If you find yourself thinking ill will toward someone often, chances are you’re holding on to hurt and are secretly, (or not so secretly) wishing bad things on them.  As “no big deal” as that sounds, that alone will keep you on the ‘not so merry go-round’ in YOUR life. And P.S, everyone knows! We can’t wear ugly on the inside and it not affect our outside, it will show in your face and attitude. For every little stone you pick up on the road you’re traveling, it makes YOUR load heavier and will keep you from traveling well. You are taking the long, hard road. Learn to travel light every single day by dropping the rock every time it presents itself. Remember, bite by bite, you eat the elephant!

•     Make a decision to believe the truth.

If you have said/thought any one of these, you’re believing a lie: “I have to perform to be loved and accepted”, “I need a boyfriend”, “Who cares what I do, it won’t affect anything” or “She’s so pretty, I wish I were her”. Does that reflect your thinking? If so, you are not telling yourself the truth. Replace those kinds of thoughts and words with words that have more value to you and humanity. Speak the opposite of those lies.

•    Make a decision to be grateful for everything.

Every day look for things to be grateful for and give voice to them whether it’s in your conversations or in written form like journaling or posting somewhere where it’s seen. Why is this so important to life? It causes us to look for the good things all day long. Your whole outlook on life changes. Life looks and feels better that way. You can change an environment by showing and being gracious. It opens up your eyes, spirit and mind to new opportunities, conversations and even relationships because people are attracted to people who look for and speak good things.
Good Decisions make life better…from here on out!
