FALL RESOLUTIONS
by: Lindsay Hawkes
Once the weather begins to cool and the leaves begin to slide off the trees onto sidewalks, my dreams begin to revolve around new school supplies and realizing that I’m sitting in class, naked.
Don’t judge. You know you’ve had those dreams too.
Even more than January, the start of fall feels like the start of a new year. Beginning school in September always marked a fresh start. And, even though school has passed, fall feels like a new beginning. A new beginning that involves wiping the old slate clean and dreaming up new goals and aspirations for the year ahead.
Or, as I like to call them, New Fall resolutions.
Join me in making one this year?
I’m not talking about creating weight loss goals or making hasty dashes to the gym to whittle your waist down a few inches. Save those for January. Or never.
I’m talking about seizing this opportunity to take a good, long look inside ourselves to figure out what we need to do to make our insides a whole lot prettier. To figure out what parts of our character could use a little refining or shaping.
Maybe it’s a quick temper that needs taming. Or a lot of ugly grudges and unforgiveness that need to be released and let go from your life.
Or maybe, like me, you need to take extra time to consider what life may be like in someone else’s shoes before you judge them.
Steal away a couple moments from your busy schedule – whether your desk is in an office or at school – and start considering what your New Fall resolutions can be.
And once you’re done thinking, start acting on the changes you want to make.
Like all other resolutions, they won’t necessarily come easily. Especially when it involves taking an honest look at who we really are. Sometimes, it feels like a cold slap across the face. But don’t be discouraged. You’re completely able to change.
Don’t be too hard on yourself. Give yourself a little grace. And, most importantly, never give up. You can do it.
And it will be worth it.
