MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL...

By: Katrina Crain

We as humans face many challenges, that's just part of life. I think my biggest challenge as a woman is constantly being faced with the perfect airbrushed images of models that we compare ourselves to. Everywhere we go, whether it's driving down the freeway where billboards bombard us, or in the grocery store lineups, those perfect bodies on the front covers of magazines are hard to avoid. Even in our homes when we want to just veg-out and watch TV, it seems every commercial and TV show has the 'perfect' stereotypical woman as a main role. I'm pretty sure this is one of the biggest problems that ignites women's insecurities.

Insecurity is breeding ground to become infatuated over trying to be perfect. This leads to depression and anxiety that creates a mentality that, "something is wrong with me" because I'm not like the images I see. I'm sure we're all guilty of obsessing over our image at times. I've experienced this and consequently became so engulfed with my body. I felt my worth was the number on the scale and convinced myself I'd be happy and loved once my body was 'perfect'. This was a very destructive way to live. Depression was the cloud that hung over me. I felt a unsatisfied desire in me that if only I could wear a size zero and only if I had no body fat I would be beautiful.

Who decided that every girl should look the same? I know men didn't decide that because there are so many different types of men with different bodies and different preferences in women. Beauty is defined by the eye of the beholder. Do we need to be beautiful according to the miniscule number of model agencies standards? Who do not even care about the models because it's okay to do drugs and starve yourself to not gain weight? Or the entertainment industry or a movie directors likes? Everyone sees beauty differently and we cannot let Hollywood control what makes women beautiful.

No one is perfect and we'll always have something we could obsess about physically; but let's not allow anyone to tell us what is beautiful. No one can make us feel insecure without our permission. Let's unlock the world to real beauty because although every woman has flaws, every women contains attractiveness. Every women has the right to feel good about themselves without having the pressure to measure up to an unrealistic status-quo. Here at Unlock we strive to inspire women to be all they can be and that includes encouraging confidence and revealing the beautiful you!
