AN OPEN HEAVEN

by: Lacey Robinson

I came upon a realization the other day that kind of rocked my world, for lack of a better phrase. It may seem simple summed up into one word: prayer. Prayer is awesome! Sometimes as a Christian, I feel like prayer is a routine, or a mandatory responsibility. Lately however, I feel genuinely lacking if I don’t pray, because I’ve missed a date with God. He asked me to go for coffee and talk to Him, and I stood Him up. Knowing how bad it feels when someone cancels a visit with me, how could I do that to God? I need to realize that although I can’t see God in the flesh, it doesn’t mean His heart doesn’t break when I don’t make the time for Him.

Lately my focus has been developing a true friendship with God. Just chatting, as if He was right beside me and we are conversing and enjoying a great time. You know, sometimes I say something funny to God, and I feel like there is a slight chance that He might be laughing up in Heaven. How amazing is that? That we serve a God who loves to sit and listen to us and develop a relationship with Him. He is proud of us, and wants us to talk to Him as a friend, about our worries, our joys, our lives! When you really come to that realization, it’s impossible to not want to pray. It becomes a desire, like you can’t go through your day without praying, because it feels like there is something missing without it.

Pray in the shower, pray in the car, pray in the bathroom, pray while you’re cooking. Why? Because it’s amazing! It’s an open Heaven, available to us, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. That’s not to say there won’t still be days where you don’t feel like praying, but trust this fact: when you begin, you will feel so glad you did. As if you don’t know why you ever thought you would stop the habit in the first place. That’s important, to make it a habit, something just as normal as a task you do every other day, like waking up or going to work. Would you just skip work because you didn’t feel like going? Of course not! Take that same attitude into your prayer life.

Even if it’s just five or ten minutes here and there throughout your day, or just a quick thank you for something you see. Or even a quick prayer for someone in your life you just saw or thought of. Whatever it may be, God has time to listen if you have time to talk.

Some people might think you’re crazy, and feel like you’re just talking to mid air while you pray, or talking to the ceiling, but we know better. Even from when I was a little kid, I have always known that there is someone listening on the other end of my prayer. It’s not even something I had to train myself to think about, I just know. There is no other way of putting it. God is listening. Even if a friend doesn’t have the time to stop and chat, God does. Even if you’re alone and feel like no one cares to listen, He will. We can take comfort in the fact that He is listening, not out of obligation, not with a half hearted attitude, but with a real love and interest. Even though we may not all hear the audible voice of God, it doesn’t mean our prayers aren’t heard or even answered. When we feel unimportant or left out, God is there to listen. Even when we don’t feel left out and we feel just fine about life, God is still there to listen. Talk to Him when times are hard, talk to Him when times are wonderful, talk to Him at all times.
