My name is MARIKA. I am a dreamer. I dream of creating and inspiring people to not give up on their life’s passions, to stand up and journey on to their destinies. It is in these dreams and goals that the world discovers hope for people no matter where they may live or how much money they may have.
Of course life is not without its own challenges. Many obstacles may stiffen your goals. Whether it be a desire to be comfortable, opposition from close friends and family, lack of money, resources, or knowledge, and the list goes on. The question is what are you willing to do about it, and who are you going to let dictate your life?
As a pop recording artist myself, I have had my share of celebrations; within my first year of release, my first two singles both went Top 19 and 20 on the international charts at radio and I had the amazing privilege of being nominated as best new urban artist at the Canadian Radio Music Awards.
However, as with any great dream, there were mountains I had to climb that inevitably made the journey harder. As time went by, there was constant pressure to look a certain way and act a certain way to produce a great product. I fully understood the business side of the music industry, but I decided early on that I would stay true to my standards to respect myself, as well as keep the values I have throughout my entire career. Because of some of these decisions, I felt that I had turned down some big opportunities in my career. Ultimately, the decisions turned out for the better, as greater opportunities and circumstances were presented to me. I am still on a journey that has greater purpose and has more to do with helping people than perhaps helping myself.
Ronnie Hawkins once said “When it stops happening for you, when you lose your touch, and you’re not hitting it dead on anymore, don’t bang your head against a brick wall, retreat and attack from another direction!”. Now many of you may not know who Ronnie Hawkins is, but he just happens to be an old friend of legendary musician and producer David Foster. It is these words that became David’s mantra – words that were told to him by his friend whom he had played with in Toronto as a teenager - that have kept him going in an industry that judges your success based on if you have a song charting on Top 40 that week. It is words like these we must capture in our hearts, take a deep breath, and run boldly into the remarkable achievement of life.
